New Sales Tax Amnesty Program for Online Sellers Starts Aug. 17

Just ahead of the busy holiday shopping season, states are incentivizing online marketplace sellers to register for tax collection and remittance within their jurisdictions. As ecommerce has risen in recent years, state and local governments are cracking down on online sellers operating within their boundaries. A new sales tax amnesty program, running from August 17 to October 17, will offer online businesses leveraging warehouses, such as Amazon’s Fulfillment centers, the opportunity to register for the amnesty without penalty of back taxes.

Raleigh dress-shop owner kept $68,000 in sales tax, state charges

Florida Drop Shipments Taxability and Recent TAA on the topic

It would be an understatement to say that the tax rules surrounding drop shipping and third-party transactions are complicated. No surprise, then, that the Florida Department of Revenue was asked to issue a Technical Assistance Advisement (TAA) on the topic. Overlooked Use Tax Triggers Large Tax Assessments

One area often overlooked by tax professionals is the accrual of use tax on taxable purchases on which the vendor did not charge tax.  Many states these days are looking to generate revenue by targeting taxpayers and assessing tax liabilities.  Unreported use tax is particularly ripe for audits.  We’re seeing more aggressive use tax audits and more aggressive penalties being assessed for non-compliance.
